Marie: Dancing Still- A New MUSICAL
Marie Dancing Still, a new Broadway bound musical, is about the famous Edgar Degas sculpture Little Dancer Aged Fourteen. Historically, little is known about Marie Van Goethem, the young lady who inspired this once notorious sculpture, but she was Degas’ muse and is the muse for this entire Broadway musical. Fortunately, I am the lucky lady who gets to play Marie and starring in this musical is my absolute dream come true.
I was first approached about the musical ten years ago when the creatives Susan Stroman (director), Lynn Ahrens (writer/lyricist), and Stephen Flaherty (composer), first conceived of this idea for a musical. To be attached to a project from the conception is something beyond special. The musical actually feels tailer-made because I am the only actress they thought of for this role. It is both an honor and a privilege to get to portray this scrappy, driven, and independent young lady who ultimately will stop at nothing for her art — her love of dance and dream of becoming a ballerina — despite all of the obstacles she had to face.
Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theater was the perfect out of town tryout location for this show. The audiences were packed and seeing their reaction night after night is truly something unforgettable. They would jump to their feet before the curtain even came down and I literally had to pinch myself during bows because the reaction was completely overwhelming. I loved sharing this truly unique and special show with Seattle and I cannot wait for the time when New Yorkers can see it on Broadway!
